Priya Sharma is a doctor who lives in the UK. Her original short stories have appeared in several magazines including Black Static, Interzone, Albedo One, and On Spec as well as anthologies Nightmare Carnival and Once Upon a Time: New Fairy Tales. Some have been reprinted in The Best Dark Fantasy and Horror and The Year’s Best Horror.

During the 1950s, Warren Roberts discovered more than nine hundred versions of this type of tale—“the kind and unkind girl”—in a multitude of countries. Neil Gaiman’s modern-day version of “Diamonds and Toads” is darker than the old tale. First written to accompany a staged photograph, if seen with that image, the ending takes on a single unambiguous meaning. Without it (or its description), you may find another interpretation altogether.
